An emergency/major incident is any event or circumstance (happening with or without warning) that causes or threatens death or injury, disruption to the community, or damage to property or to the environment on such a scale that the effect cannot be dealt with by the emergency services as part of their normal day to day activities.
Nearly all emergencies affecting the village and Parish of Ixworth & Ixworth Thorpe will be dealt with routinely by an integrated multi-agency response, including the emergency services, West Suffolk District Council, Suffolk County Council, utilities and voluntary agencies. However, a situation could occur, such as extensive flooding, storm damage, deep snow or a major incident which could delay the arrival of outside assistance, when the community will need to help itself.
Emergency Planning is all about ensuring that strategies are put in place to mitigate the effects of such an incident.
A community emergency plan works best when you can call on others to provide assistance or resources. This can range from somebody checking on vulnerable residents during periods of snow to a business donating equipment or offering other services which could be utilised to benefit the whole community during an event.
Emergencies happen. Local emergency responders will always have to prioritise those in greatest need during an emergency, especially where life is in danger. There will be times when you may be affected by an emergency but your life is not in immediate danger. During this time, you need to know how to help yourself and those around you. By becoming more resilient, you and your community can complement the work of local emergency responders and reduce the impact of an emergency on your community both in the short and long term.
